Об исполнителе (группе)

Recorded live at the Saptak Music Festival 2001
The absorption of elements from music cultures outside the Indian sub-continent has been a significant feature in the evolution of North Indian Classical Music. Most of the popular instruments used in North India today including Sitar and Santoor, have their roots in Persia and the Middle East.
The modern Sarod owes its existence to the Afghan Rebab. Experimentation and innovation continues to be part of the tradition, as modern musicians endeavour to search for new ways of exploring an ancient music system that is flexible enough to absorb and accept external influences.
Ravi Shankar opened up the dialogue between eastern and western music traditions in the 1960's. He laid the foundations for other innovators who discovered new sounds to reflect the distinctive colours, moods and nuances of Indian classical music.
The guitar is the latest addition to the repertory of Indian music instruments. This relatively simple six-stringed instrument has been transformed in the hands of Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
After introducing a series of modifications including the addition of fourteen extra 'sympathetic' strings, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has since developed a playing style, which ingeniously assimilates the sounds of the ancient Veena, Sitar and Sarod. Its sound is so distinctive that it is now known as the 'Mohan Veena'.
Vishwa Mohan Bhatt hails from an illustrious family of musicians from Jaipur, in Rajasthan. He started his musical training with his eldest brother, Shashi Mohan Bhatt, before taking guidance from Pandit Ravi Shankar. His capacity for invention and assimilation was globally recognised in 1994 with the coveted Grammy Award for 'Best World Music Album' for his collaborative recording with American guitarist Ry Cooder. He is only the second Indian musician awarded the honour, after his own mentor Ravi Shankar.
In this live performance recorded at Saptak Music Festival 2001, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt presents two raags played in contrasting styles. He begins his recital with the meditative evening raag, Puriya Dhanashri, played as a solo piece ('Alap') in three sections without rhythmic accompaniment.
Firstly, the image of the raag is outlined in a slow improvised elaboration of the main notes and melodic phrases. In the second section called jod, the pace is gently increased, the raag's melodic movements expressed through rhythmic phrases. In the final 'jhaala' stage, the pace intensifies with intricate musical phrases accompanied by constant strokes on the sympathetic drone strings (chikari).
The second part of the performance features the enchanting evening raag, Shyam Kalyan. Here, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is joined by the young tabla player Sandeep Das, disciple of Kishen Maharaj of the Benares gharana (school) of tabla.
The composition is played in a slow lilting tempo of sixteen beats. This rhythmic framework gives both soloist and tabla accompaniment great scope for improvisations and both take turns to demonstrate their virtuosity with great effect.
The third piece is a faster composition, again in tintaal (sixteen beats), in Raag Shyam Kalyan. Here, the improvisations lead to a gradual development of speed and excitement, bringing the performance to an exhilarating end.
